Kelly and Caitlin have been married for 6 years, and together for 7. Kelly has been in the United States Marine Corps for 10 years as military police. He’s done two tours in Afghanistan and in 2016 received unaccompanied orders to Okinawa, Japan.
Unaccompanied orders means that he had to move to Okinawa, and his wife and daughter had to stay stateside. And this wasn’t just a quick little visit, this was for two years.
Although it’s not considered a deployment, being separated for such a long time is more than difficult, it’s excruciating.
Everyone misses out on something, from promotions, to birthdays, to holidays, surgeries, first days of school… the list goes on and on.
But sometimes the saying “Absence makes the heart grow fonder” is the most true thing to have every been said. Here they are, coming together here in Okinawa, and this time they will all get to go home together.
Watching the sunset with the three of them was so wonderful. The love they have for each other is so precious, and it was an honor and a blessing to be the one to capture these wonderful moments with them.
